While the recreational drone market is growing rapidly, so are concerns about aircraft safety.
Governments are deeply concerned about the dangers for commercial aircraft, and billions are being spent on both sides of the equation. Finding outdoor places to fly is getting increasingly difficult, and will become much more difficult when an accident eventually happens and enforcement start. If anyone can successfully negotiate SFOCs with Transport Canada--it should be First Nations, who own the airspace above their land.
WHAT DRONE TERRITORY OFFERS
Offer recreational drone pilots a fun place to fly, learn, try, and buy
Create technology-centred youth employment opportunities for First Nations
Give BC a leadership position in the new drone tourism market
Keep drone pilots in clearly designated areas, away from Air Traffic
DRONE TERRITORY TAKES OFF
In the first phase of Drone Territory, we are focused on partnerships with other First Nations who want to participate in the growing economic opportunities from the drone industry.
So for our first events we are building capacity, training indigenous youth to fly drones. We are hoping to announce one or two drone parks in the Metro Vancouver area in 2018.
All of this is at an early phase, we are in the process of raising money and gaining support for the concept and it would be very cool if we could have the West Coast Drone Racing League as a Partner.
